Twittermania

August 20, 2008

Mashable has a list of 140+ Twitter applications! What's your favorite Twitter app and why do you use it?

We use twitterfox. It attaches to firefox and makes tweets pop-up in the lower right hand corner of your browser, so you can keep up without going back to twitter.com/home , and you can reply and tweet from the little box.

Wow! It's so amazing how Twitter has grown so much in recent months! Why is it so popular? It must scratch a serious itch. What itch does Twitter scratch?

And, 140 applications! We are firmly in the middle of Web 2.0 - perhaps Web 3.0 is when we start using hundreds of desktop applications that work in tandem with the internet to better gather, refine, and communicate information. It feels like a new age for the internet - something significant is happening. Do you feel it?

Road Trip Flashback - Ed Young on Betrayal

Last week I had the opportunity to speak to a group of youth pastors in Charlotte, NC.  Josh Robertson hosted a youth pastor appreciation day through YCI (Youth Commission International) and invited me to share for a few minutes...I will jump at any chance to say thanks to men and women serving on the front line of the church.

As part of the talk I shared highlights from some of our road trip adventures - here is a flashback to our time with Ed Young while we were in Grapevine, TX.  Ed talks about "betrayal" and our choice to forgive others or swell with bitterness.

What has been helpful for you in the process of forgiving others?

Like your hair is on fire

Seth Godin recently wrote about the fact that right now is one of the slowest times of the year for American businesses, and he challenges us to use this time strategically to finish out the projects that have been dragging on and on and on. Either hunker down, dig your hands into it, focus, and get it done or decide once and for all that it needs to be cancelled.

What task is hanging around your neck like an albatross? What ball-and-chain project do you think has the potential to be clasped to your leg for years if you don't finish it or cut it off? Is there something you've been putting off that you should officially deem not worth doing?

Video Venue Theology

August 19, 2008

"An estimated 2,000 to 2,500 U.S. congregations now operate multiple campuses, and many of them, like Buckhead Church, are so-called video venues. The Leadership Network, a Christian nonprofit that follows these multisite churches, says there will be 30,000 of them within a few years."

- from Slate Magazine's interesting article about the rise of the video venue.

"the unorthodox arrangement relieves young pastors of the burden of writing and delivering a weekly sermon, leaving them more time to spend with their members, staffs, and families ...... for Christians looking to create community on a more intimate level, video venues do present an alternative to the suburban megaflock."

However, "using video goes against a critical tenet of Protestant faith: the priesthood of all believers. Instead of a real experience, it offers a mediated one that inherently puts the pastor in a position of greater power over the masses."

What do you think of Video Venues? Have you attended a Video Venue? What are the benefits/drawbacks?

Secrets of the Catalyst Concierge

Keeping track of hundreds of thousands of next generation leaders is not an easy task. But several years ago, Chad Johnson created the role of the Catalyst Concierge. We now have eight full-time concierges on our team. Their heart and passion is to help church leaders have the most incredible experience at our events. They spend their days praying with pastors, encouraging church planters, finding resources, and connecting leaders.

What you might not know is that on the desk of every concierge is a good, old-fashioned concierge's bell. It's a reminder of their objective to serve the church leader. And every so often during the week, you'll hear a bell ring in response to a remarkable conversation, a powerful prayer, or a connection that was made. Cheers erupt throughout the Catalyst offices. These guys and gals genuinely care for the leaders in our community
