Robots May Vote

January 31, 2007

Robots may vote and be entitled to healthcare in 50 years. No, this is not intended as a joke. It is a serious prediction in a study commissioned by Great Britain's Office of Science and Innovation's Horizon Scanning Center. The predictions for developments by 2056 include an examination of the potential advances in artificial intelligence. The paper predicts a monumental shift could take place "if" robots develop the ability to reproduce or upgrade themselves, according to the BBC. If such advancement occurs, robots could be granted voting rights, be provided housing and healthcare benefits, and be required to pay taxes, and serve in the military.

A LifeWay Survey finds the church's inability to minister to young adults is a major influence in their leaving the church. 73% of church members and 47% of non-affiliated 18-34 year olds indicate community with peers is extremely important to them, yet after high school churches send them to their next life stage without accountability. LifeWay Young Adult Ministry Director, Jim Johnston, says "The church ought to be the author and purveyor of the best, deepest, most loving friendships around." 71% of young adult churchgoers want to participate in small-group meetings to discuss life application of Scripture. Young adults gravitate to churches making an impact. Johnston notes, "They want to embrace church, but only the genuine, earth-shaking, Christ-powered New Testament church."

Crisis in Darfur

January 26, 2007

NBC's news anchor Ann Curry continues to cover the crisis in Darfur, the region in the Sudan of Africa plagued with ethnic cleansing. In this video podcast (click here to download it free from itunes). Curry talks with New York Times journalist Nick Kristof, who has also spent significant time in Darfur. Curry and Kristof point out that if only 100 people from each congressional district write to their US Representatives, the US is more likely to intervene, and potentially terminate the genocide before it reaches proportions similar to Rwanda's crisis in the 1990s. To determine your US Representative and obtain his/her address, click here and enter your state and 9-digit ZIP code.
