Reconciling Sufjan Stevens

March 15, 2007

This is how I was introduced to Sufjan Stevens - a Christian friend told me about this "Christian artist who is actually good." The madness of this claim motivated me to buy the album. While "CCM" artists only know how to speak about Jesus in their songs, Sufjan is good at addressing the Jesus in other people or other situations. This is what makes him ten times more relevant than Jars Of Clay ever was, even though he might be ten times less gutsier. While contemporary Christian musicians try to inject as much of Jesus into mainstream culture as they can, religious hipster musicians spend time pointing out that he already was and is. Sufjan may not be talented at rocking our socks off but he can find the Gospel in the pettiest of stories and situations. He can point it out in the most mundane of characters or in the most evil of serial killers. Read the complete article here.

North Point Community Church Offers FREE Resources

March 13, 2007

North Point Community Church now has a website that offers many of their church government, human resources, accounting, facilities, web and tech, and other resources online for free! According to the site, "Over the past ten years, we have brainstormed, strategized, tweaked, and modified our model. We have compiled much of our philosophy, strategy, practices, and processes on this site in an effort to help other churches learn from our experiences. We've included things like: why we do some of the things we do, what has worked well, and what hasn't worked well. We'll be the first to admit that we're not there yet! We hope you will find this site helpful as you create environments for people to connect meaningfully with God..." Check out the site here.

Citizen Bono Brings Africa to Idle Rich

March 12, 2007

If you are a rock star with a touch of the messiah complex, saving the world one song at a time has its limits. Even John Lennon didn't make much progress on world peace before he died. So Bono, the rare rock star with an ability to make a dent in something besides the pop charts, has met with everyone from Pope John Paul II to President Bush in an effort to achieve debt relief and address poverty and AIDS in the undeveloped world. He is also pushing his agenda one T-shirt at a time with a product line called Red that includes clothing, iPods and credit cards. But even those combined efforts have been slow going. So now Bono is opening up another front with an unlikely weapon: as the guest editor of the July issue of Vanity Fair, he will try to rebrand Africa. "We need to get better at storytelling," Bono said, sitting in the 22nd floor of the office of Graydon Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair. "Bill Gates tells me this all the time. We've got to get better at telling the success stories of Africa in addition to the horror stories. And this magazine tells great stories." Read the complete article here.

Gaming World Continues To Go “Life Like”

March 11, 2007

Sony announced a new feature for the PlayStation 3 called Home. Similar to Second Life, player's make realistic avatars. They go to a three-dimensional world (adorned with advertising) and chat with other players -- using both text and voice chat. There will be games like pool and soccer to play in the world, as well as arcade games. Each player will have a house that they can decorate using free objects or objects they purchase from Sony. Players can also import personal pictures and movies from devices they plug into the PS3, and display them in their apartment. With so many now spending time on their Playstation 2 or 3, or X-box, is it possible to dive even deeper into the fantasy world of the Gaming World? Looks like it is. Read the entire article here
