Our nation (and even the Church) is polarized over many issues. Debates over these issues are increasingly characterized by angry demonizing rather than thoughtful discussion. This volatile form of debate divides us more than it solves problems. What if we came to each other with a desire to understand the other point of view, and clearly laid-out our reasons for agreement and disagreement? Although more difficult and time-consuming, this form of debate might be more productive in the long run.
