We Lost

Christians are well known for fighting culture wars. In the public arena we have a reputation for arguing/picketing/boycotting in an effort to make our nation behave according to Christian morals. This might be the equivalent of Paul, in Athens, standing up to condemn the Athenians for worshiping false Gods.

Needless to say, our strategy hasn't worked. The world is still immoral, as Jesus said it would be, and they no longer listen to us.

S. Michael Craven has an insightful piece on this problem from The Christian Post:

"The world is changing and so much of our current approach may rest on the idea that there still remains a Christian consensus on morality and ethics - that the Christian interpretation of reality is still welcome in the public square. Generally speaking, I am not sure this is the case today. Granted there are "pockets" of Christian consensus but the halls of power and the commanding heights of culture appear generally and emphatically unChristian in their philosophy. If that is true, then we must consider the changing cultural context and adjust our approach to cultural engagement."

As it is written:

"I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people - not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.... What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside." (1 Cor. 5:9-13).

Homosexuality - A Polarizing Term…

February 24, 2008

It often stirs emotional reaction at the mere mention of it... homosexuality. Why has this become such a polarizing topic? Maybe because it quickly cuts to the core of a person's ?! What is painfully clear is that homosexuality rests on the dividing line between church and culture. Yesterday we were able to spend the day at the Love Won Out Conference in Memphis, TN and heard from several voices... men and women sharing their personal stories and rich wisdom on the topic of homosexuality.

Below you will find links and resources that we hope will help you navigate through your own personal response to homosexuality as well as video clips highlighting brief interviews with three of the Love Won Out speakers. Mike Haley, Alan Chambers, and Nancy Heche were incredibly gracious in offering their insight directly to the Catalyst audience.

February 23, 2008 - Love Won Out Conference, Memphis

February 23, 2008

11:03PM
Today was intended to be a "day off" from the Catalyst Road Trip as we spent time at the Love Won Out Conference from Focus on the Family. The Love Won Out ministry exhorts and equips the church to respond in a Christ-like way to the issue of homosexuality, an issue that we all know is on the front line of the church. When Mike Haley shared his testimony about his journey out of the homosexual lifestyle it became crystal clear that what was being shared would add great value to the road trip blog.

Homosexuality. The world is talking about it and yet the church continues to play catch up... chances are if you are reading this blog then you know someone who is dealing with the issue of homosexuality on some level. Maybe you are dealing with this it on a personal level. It is a polarizing issue in our culture, and what is sad is that the church is often the last place a person would go to find help. Have you read unChristian? Christians are now widely identified as anti-homosexual and judgemental. How will the church respond? What can be done? There are men and women speaking with peace, clarity, and hope. Their voices are like drops of rain on parched soil. Mike Haley (author and speaker for Focus on the Family with an amazing testimony), Alan Chambers (President of Exodus International), and Nancy Heche (author, speaker, and mother of Anne Heche, Ellen Degeneress' former partner) broke away from the conference for a few minutes and spent some time with us in the Catalyst Vanagon. You do not want to miss what they have to say about the issue of homosexuality. It's late and we have an early morning tomorrow as we leave for Little Rock, AR - the videos from Mike, Alan, and Nancy will be posted tomorrow. Here is a picture capturing this surprise opportunity to connect with so many leaders in the church blazing a trail along the controversial line of homosexuality:

Clean Water is Fun

Here's an interesting video from an awesome new blog THE PLOW. This woman found a creative way to harness the inexhaustible desire for play and use it to produce clean water.

Check-out the video.

Brainstorm with us! Is there anyway we can harness "play" to advance the kingdom?
