Early Bird Registration for Whiteboard Sessions

March 31, 2008

The Whiteboard Sessions is a compelling new conference featuring innovative and challenging speakers. And TODAY is the last day to sign-up for EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION.

Awesome things about this conference: 1) conveniently located inside your hotel 2) content-packed 1-day event, your time is valuable 3) 8 phenomenal speakers! 4) succinct 30 min. format cuts the fluff, brings the sirloin steak.

Talk to your Executive Pastor about attending. Tell him it's only one day, you can drive there and back, and not even sleep in a hotel - tell him you'll pay for gas and lunch if he pays for the conference.

NEW Road Trip Map & Timeline - Florida!

March 28, 2008

Road Trip #5 - Florida (4/1 - 4/8)
click on the map below for more details

road-trip-5-map.png

We have never been accused of being intelligent... which is why this road trip makes so much sense. If the Vanagon Vagabonds had been smart we would have traveled to Florida during the cold months and saved our trips up north for warmer months. Instead, we chose to travel north, with no heater, during times of paralyzing cold and stupid snow. Well, now we face a new challenge - Florida, in the spring, with no A/C! That's right! Beginning next Tuesday, we are headed down I75 South towards Florida with the windows rolled down, our sleeves rolled up, and our flip flops on... The Catalyst Vanagon is taking on Sunshine State! Maybe we'll lose a few pounds and remedy this pathetic pasty complexion... or maybe we'll just sweat our tails off and keep smiling! Road Trip #5 to Florida kicks off next Tuesday...

Stay tuned!

The Atheist Delusion

This rather long article from guardian.co.uk, is a fair editorial piece that explains how the New Atheists use similar "evangelistic" tactics that they condemn in Christianity. Furthermore, it reveals some of the holes in their simplistic arguments - which is helpful for understanding the problems with this movement. Below are a few penetrating quotes:

"Just as much as these religions, it is a project of universal conversion. Evangelical atheists never doubt that human life can be transformed if everyone accepts their view of things, and they are certain that one way of living - their own, suitably embellished - is right for everybody. To be sure, atheism need not be a missionary creed of this kind. It is entirely reasonable to have no religious beliefs, and yet be friendly to religion. It is a funny sort of humanism that condemns an impulse that is peculiarly human. Yet that is what evangelical atheists do when they demonise religion."

"Dawkins's "memetic theory of religion" is a classic example of the nonsense that is spawned when Darwinian thinking is applied outside its proper sphere."

"Dawkins makes much of the oppression perpetrated by religion, which is real enough. He gives less attention to the fact that some of the worst atrocities of modern times were committed by regimes that claimed scientific sanction for their crimes. Nazi "scientific racism" and Soviet "dialectical materialism" reduced the unfathomable complexity of human lives to the deadly simplicity of a scientific formula. In each case, the science was bogus, but it was accepted as genuine at the time, and not only in the regimes in question. Science is as liable to be used for inhumane purposes as any other human institution. Indeed, given the enormous authority science enjoys, the risk of it being used in this way is greater."

"The problem with the secular narrative is not that it assumes progress is inevitable (in many versions, it does not). It is the belief that the sort of advance that has been achieved in science can be reproduced in ethics and politics. In fact, while scientific knowledge increases cumulatively, nothing of the kind happens in society. Slavery was abolished in much of the world during the 19th century, but it returned on a vast scale in nazism and communism, and still exists today. Torture was prohibited in international conventions after the second world war, only to be adopted as an instrument of policy by the world's pre-eminent liberal regime at the beginning of the 21st century. Wealth has increased, but it has been repeatedly destroyed in wars and revolutions. People live longer and kill one another in larger numbers. Knowledge grows, but human beings remain much the same."

This article brings some interesting questions! I LOVE questions! If you've read this far, than maybe you'll be open for discussing a few ideas:

The New Atheists want a religion free nation. Would that hurt our help us? The Church in China seems to be exploding under oppression. Would that work for us?

Why are the New Atheists so convinced we bring about evil? I think it's because we've done a poor job of representing Jesus, what do you think? Why do they lump us in the category of radical Muslims?

If you read the full article, the author gives examples of how the worship of science leads to some embarrassing assumptions and mistaken conclusions. How is this affecting our culture now?

Other thoughts?

“The Wastefulness of Grace” (Paul Young & Ernie Johnson)

March 27, 2008

shackcover.jpg"The Wastefulness of Grace." A simple phrase... yet anything but simple. Paul Young (William Young), author of The Shack, used this phrase while we were hanging out with him two nights ago, and it's impact has not waned; in fact, it has only intensified. "The Wastefulness of Grace." It's true. God could very well be accused of wasting the most precious of gifts - grace - because of how foolishly He offers it to people that continue to turn away, people like me. But He does it anyway, because He loves, and therein lies all the explanation we have. It is not easily understood nor will it ever be... as Paul shared, we are just invited to partake. He said, "it's taken me 50 years to learn about God's love." And his journey continues.

Videos With Paul Young (The Shack) & Ernie Johnson (NBA on TNT) Below...

We heard that Paul was in Atlanta traveling around speaking to different audiences and making himself available to meet people at multiple bookstores and sign their books. We called him after lunch this past Tuesday and left a message basically saying, "hey, can we get a picture with you and the Vanagon?" Within an hour Paul called us back and was excited to get together... and he gave us so much more than just a photo opportunity. The funny part came when he told me that a friend of his was going to be with him and wondered if he could bring him along. "Absolutely, who is your friend?" Paul replied, "Ernie Johnson. Do you know him?" Are you kidding? Yes, the NBA on TNT is a staple for many of the Catalyst Team members. Ernie was playing host to Paul and driving him around Atlanta... so Tuesday night we were invited to meet Paul Young and his driver, Ernie Johnson. :-)
Here is where it gets even funnier. The Vanagon is in the shop getting new speakers (thanks to JRD Tuning in Braselton, GA, our sponsor for ALL custom upgrades in the Vanagon) which meant that the only way we could have a true "Road Trip Rendezvous" would be to meet in the shop with the van, but we were not going to be able to get together till after 11PM. Niclas Jancic from JRD is the unsung hero as he gracioulsy stayed late and kept the shop open for us so we could meet.

Ernie Johnson and Paul Young obliged our request to ask a couple of question on camera, and because Paul will be speaking at the Catalyst Conference in Atlanta, October 8-11, we wanted to provide you with a brief introduction. Two videos follow - 1) An Introduction of Paul Young, and 2) A chance to hear from Ernie Johnson about how his friendship with Paul Young began as a result of the The Shack.
