Ed Stetzer on Missional Mega Churches

March 27, 2008

Ed Stetzer is a genius, interesting author/speaker and blog-master.

He confesses that it can more difficult for large churches to be "missional". So he includes an article - here - giving suggestions for large churches on how to be missional.

"There are many who think that large churches simply cannot be missional. To be fair, I think it is more difficult at a mega church. Large churches can and do struggle with the tendency to turn inward. Having 'much' makes it harder to focus on the mission because it requires so much energy to maintain the system. In other words, the more you have, the more you must focus on keeping 'it' going."

What is your church doing to be missional? (are you wondering what the heck does "missional" mean?)

Blog Upgrades & Additions! (New Picture Below)

March 26, 2008

Although there are several recent upgrades and additions to The Catalyst Road Trip Blog (as will be highlighted below) there is only one that really deserves... pardon, demands, your time. At the end of this sentence you should stop reading and immediately look to the banner at the top of this blog and click on "Arcade!!" where Catatris and Catalyst Invaders will inspire you to a whole new level of productivity! :-)
"FOLLOW US"
You can now follow the Catalyst Road Trip Team through several online avenues: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr!, Vimeo, & Jaiku. Yeah, that's a mouthfull! If you know what those terms mean then you will find it much easier to stay updated; simply click one or more of the links in the right margin under the title, "Follow the Vanagon," OR along the top banner under the title, "Follow Us!!!" We hope to make it easy and fun for you to be able to join our adventures on the road!

"NEW VIDEOS"
All of our videos are being moved to VimeoREPLACEME where you will be able to see our road trip videos in one place, subscribe as a follower, and have the opportunity to download the video files. We found that the image quality is MUCH better. Videos are now organized on this blog under two (2) pages, "Catalyst Voices," and "Fun Videos."

  1. "Catalyst Voices" will highlight insight, wisdom, leadership lessons, and personal stories from key leaders that were gracious enough to offer a few minutes of their time.
  2. "Fun Videos!" offers highlights of previous road trips AND a couple of behind the scenes videos of our Catalyst team. Before clicking "Fun Videos" please let go of any and all expectations you might have of quality filmmaking! :-)

A new video from our time with Paul Young, author of The Shack and his friend, Ernie Johnson, will be added soon.

"ARCADE"
Serioulsy, if are reading this far then you didn't listen... get back to the Arcade and waste more time playing one of two classic games, our versions of Tetris or Space Invaders. It's simple, you need a break from the insight and wisdom shared by some of the front line leaders featured on this blog and the Catalyst Arcade is the place to unwind. Enjoy!

Thanks for your interest in what we are doing; sometimes it's hard to believe that we get to drive around the country in one of the coolest vehicles ever assembled and meet with some of the coolest people around. The Lord is peeling away the cover and giving us a chance to see more of what He is doing across the country; the stories we are hearing, and the wisdom that is being shared has been beyond encouraging. The journey continues, and we count it an honor to have you join us, thanks again!

Craig G. on Seat Turns

Craig Groeschel has distinguished himself for being very open, honest and authentic about issues pastors face. In this blog post, Craig talks about using "Seat Turns" - rather than attendance - to measure your impact.

"Honoring God with a wise use of resources is very important to me. Because of this value, we have never tried to build (or purchase) large buildings so we could have everyone in one (or two) experiences. Instead, we consider our use of a building more successful if we are using it five, or six, or seven times on a weekend (as opposed to once or twice.)"

"Seat Turns" add a new dimension to the discussion about building stewardship. Honestly, I never thought about stewardship in this way. What are you doing to be a good steward of your building?

Paul Young, author of The Shack

March 25, 2008

The Catalyst Road Trip team is headed to Braselton, GA tonight to meet Paul Young, author of The Shack. Eugene Peterson says, "This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress did for his. It's that good!" We are looking forward to sitting down with Paul and hearing more of his story as well as asking him about The Shack, a book that is greatly impacting the church on a grass roots level.

Take a minute and see for yourself...

Viewer’s Choice Contest Update - THE WINNING CITY IS…

Loudonville, OH!

winner.jpgThat's right, the Catalyst Road Trip team is heading back to Ohio, but this time a little further north, to visit Pastor Charles Hill and the email happy crew of New Hope Community Church. We'd be remiss if we did not give a quick shout out to the gang in Portland, OR and Washington, D.C. who also expressed serious interest in having a visit from the Catalyst Vanagon and company.

A phone call and email have been sent to Pastor Charles asking for a time to connect so we can nail down the details, and as soon as we know, we will post them on here. This last week has been incredibly relaxing and refreshing which is probably what has fueled the inspiration behind our choice of "next stops" on the Catalyst Road Trip. Early next week we are going to head down to Florida to visit some friends of Catalyst and church leaders throughout the sunshine state. Hey, the vanagon has battled the snow and cold, why not enjoy some sun and warmer weather?! But if it snows in southern Florida then I will immediately drive the Vanagon into the ocean and walk home!!!

We are still deciding on whether or not we will leave on Monday or Tuesday, but the plans are coming together quickly. Look for an updated Map soon on the Road Trip Map page of the blog. Also, you may have noticed a new format to many of our videos... an explanation of blog updates will be coming shortly.

Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday, stay tuned!!!

(Are you kidding, A Road Trip Arcade?! It doesn't get much better than this :-)
