FIVE LEADERSHIP LESSONS

August 05, 2008

Dave Ferguson posted his Five Leadership Lessons over at his blog. This is good stuff for next-generation leaders:

1. The “God-Thing” Comes Before  The Vision
Most leaders make the mistake of thinking that change starts with their vision; change starts with a “God-thing”. ...

2. Money Always Follows Vision
People give money to a compelling cause with a clear vision. ...

3. Make It Fit On A Napkin.
If it can’t be explained on a napkin it is too complicated. ...

4. Lead With A “Yes” And Ask “How” Later
If you want to lead in bringing about innovation learn to lead with a “yes” and not “how”. ...

5. Take Risks On Emerging Leaders & Artists
Resist the urge of telling young leaders to wait a few years; they need and deserve opportunities to lead, so take a risk on them now! ...

EXCITING NEWS FROM THE CATALYST PODCAST:
The latest Catalyst Podcast (releasing tomorrow) features a fantastic interview with Mike Huckabee, former 2-Term Governor of Arkansas and Republican Presidential Candidate, don't miss it!

THE FUTURE OF CHURCH

A few days ago we highlighted some statistics that said that church attendance is declining across the U.S. Chuck Warnock ascribes this to the hurting economy and high gas prices. He further made 4 predictions about how this will affect and change the way we do "church":

"1. Redefinition of “church.” Church will no longer be the place we go, church will be the people we share faith with. Churches will still meet together for worship at a central time and location, but that will become secondary to the ministry performed during the week....

2. Restructuring of church operations. Due to the high cost of fuel and a struggling economy, churches will become smaller, more agile, and less expensive to operate than in the past. ... Church buildings will become increasingly more expensive to maintain, and churches with unused weekday space will consider partnerships with businesses, other ministries, and helping agencies. Or churches will sell their conventional buildings and reestablish in storefronts that operate as retail businesses 6 days a week, and gathering places on Sunday (or Thursday or whenever)....

3. Repackaging of “sermons” and Christian education. With fewer people “attending” church, fewer will also attend Christian education classes. Churches will deliver Christian education content via mobile devices. Short video clips accessible from iPhones (and other smart devices) will be the primary content carriers for church and culture. Church members will still gather, but more for monthly celebrations, fellowship, and sharing than weekly meetings, worship, or learning....

4. Refocus from institution to inspiration. Okay, so I went for the easy alliteration there. Restated, less emphasis on the “church” and more on how the Church enables its adherents to live their faith. Declining church attendance is not a crisis of faith, it’s a crisis of delivery...."

Interesting thoughts. Not sure if these are tied necessarily to rising energy prices and the cooling economy, or if they're more missional goals for the Church.

Do you forsee these things happening in the Church? OR Have you noticed any effects on your church caused by the economy or gas prices? Lower attendance? Lower tithes?

Catalyst Road Trip with Ed Bastian, President of Delta!

August 01, 2008

Ed BastianOver the next several weeks, as we quickly approach Catalyst Conference (Oct. 8-10), the Catalyst Road Trip will be touring Atlanta meeting with local leaders and influencers as well as group leaders that have been a significant part of the Catalyst Movement.  This morning is a morning that will not quickly be forgotten - Ed Bastian, President of Delta Airlines (now the largest airline provider in the world after announcing their merge with Northwest Airlines) stopped by the Catalyst office to meet with our team and share more of his journey.

Ed left the office about an hour ago so the video is not edited yet but will be soon, stay tuned...you are not going to want to miss what he shared with us.  Brad Lomenick lead the intreview, Jeremie Kubicek (owner and President of our parent organization, Giant Impact) joined us along with Jayson Teagle, one of Giant's charismatic young leaders.  I was on hand to capture this moment for you and the rest of our Catalyst audience through pictures and video.  We asked Ed to share with us a more intimate glimpse of his story both personally and professionally...his answers were gold.  Ed took a few minutes to share with us about his faith and helped peeled back the layers surrounding the connection dynamic between pastors and business leaders.  How often do pastors strugle to connect with key business leaders in their congregation?  How often do business leaders struggle to reach out to their pastors?  It is very common and Ed responded with great insight.

LV & Ed BastianAnd finally, I had the chance to ask Ed about what he would say to a young leader like myself.  "Ed, what kind of advice would you give to a 29 year old young leader who desires to grow and mature in the areas of leadership and influence?"  It would be worth your time to check back and watch the video offering a response directly from him, but part of his answer still lingers in my mind right now, "be available and open to the journey ahead."  Ed Bastian didn't plan to be the President of Delta.  In fact, when he graduated college, he had never stepped foot in an aiport!  Now he is the President of the largest airline provider in the world...Ed was strategic and made plans, but he did not force his life in any specific direction.  He was, and is, simply available.

More soon!
