Drink Coffee & Do Good?!  Sign me up!

Land of a Thousand HillsRecently I had the chance to meet with Robert Crow & Jonathan Golden from Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee in Roswell, GA.  Here's the deal - I'm not a coffee guy, but these guys made me a cup of coffee that put a smile on my face...the coffee is that good.

Robert, Jonathan, and the team from Land of a Thousand Hills have been friends of Catalyst for years now and we wanted to hear more about what they are doing to make an impact in Rwanda, a country torn apart by civil war and genocide.  Check out the interview we did with them and take a minute to hear from Robert as he shares about a NEW project they are working on that will save lives!

Defy the IRS?

Last weekend 33 pastors/rabbis/faith leaders joined together with the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) to protest the law against non-profits endorsing a political candidate. They will be endorsing their candidate from the pulpit in order to get a case in court and overturn the law. From the Washington Times:

The ADF is contesting the 1954 "Johnson Amendment," named after then-Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson who inserted language into the IRS code that prohibited nonprofit groups, including churches, from endorsing or opposing candidates for political office. His efforts were aimed at two anti-communist nonprofit groups that opposed his re-election to the Senate, but had far greater effect on America's churches, synagogues, mosques and temples

The Wall Street Journal pulled an interesting quote:

"Congress has created a provision" to exempt churches from taxes, "and that provision has restrictions," says Donald Tobin, associate law-school dean at Ohio State University and a former Justice Department attorney. Churches "are obligated to follow them if they want the benefit."

What do you think? Should churches/mosques/synogogues be allowed to retain their tax-exempt status, while endorsing a candidate for office? Would you give-up your tax-exempt rights in order to endorse a candidate? For pastors, are there any government restrictions you would refuse in order to retain your tax exempt status? - being forced to perform gay marriages or being restricted from speaking against homosexuality, for example.

Dr. Johnny Hunt, newly elected President of the Southen Baptist Convention

September 29, 2008

Dr. Johnny HuntThis morning Brian Cole and I drove to First Baptist Church Woodstock to meet with Dr. Johnny Hunt, recently elected President of the Southen Baptist Convention.  Dr. Hunt (or "Pastor Johnny" as he is known around Woodstock) is now leading the charge for America's largest protestant body with over 42,000 churches.  In recent years the SBC's membership numbers have decreased and Dr. Hunt recognizes the state of the Southern Baptist Convention, "we are on the verge of revival or ruin."  In a response to a survey question by the Baptist Press concerning this alarming reality Dr. Hunt said, "We must make up our minds to come together for the common cause of the Great Commission."

This was my first opportunity to spend time with Dr. Hunt, and I must admit that I was blown away by his humility and undeniable heart for raising up young leaders...as evidenced by the fact that the median age of his church is 33.  (a church of over 15,000)  Dr. Hunt was honest about the overwhelming need to connect with the younger generation and how critical it is for young leaders to be developed.  After turning down the nomination for president of the SBC five years in a row, Dr. Hunt sensed that the Lord was giving him the green light to allow for his name to be considered.  His election places him in a position of great responsibility and great opportunity...and he knows it.  We are working on a video from our time together and will post it here as soon as it is finished.

It was a gift to be able to sit down with "Pastor Johnny" and hear more about his new leadership role with the Souther Baptist Convention AND a chance to hear what he would say to young leaders in our culture today.  Stay tuned for our video; it will be posted soon...
