#Together Tuesday

October 21, 2008

From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (Eph. 4:16)

Social networking is exploding, especially through twitter. This is a good thing, because the body of Christ needs to be networked together. Every member should be using their gifts, supporting other members, working Together.

Therefore, we are re-purposing Tuesday to be "Together Tuesday." Every Tuesday, go to lunch with another member of the body. Talk to them about who they are, what God has gifted them to do, what passions He has given them. This would be especially helpful if it's someone that you don't know really well, maybe a twitter acquaintance, pastor of another church, or a new person in your small group.

Or, if you prefer, this week is the perfect time to rehash what God said to you at Catalyst. Call-up a friend that went to Catalyst also, go to lunch and share with each other what you learned.

Support the body by getting connected with the other members, and we will all build each other up in love as we learn to work together, collaborating to fulfill God's mission.

Catalyst has earworms

You know earworms, those songs that get stuck in your head for days and drive you nuts? I've had Springsteen's "Thunder Road" playing in my brain for going on four weeks now. Occasionally, though, these mental tickertapes manifest themselves in a truth or a word from God that you can't escape (Margaret Feinberg calls these "sacred echoes," but that's another post). The Catalyst Conference is usually good for at least three or four of them each year. I'm sure you're all still re-hashing everything you learned this year, but tell me: What has been spoken at past Catalysts that you're still thinking about? Something Rob Bell said in 2003, or a point Louie Giglio made in his 2006 talk, or a passing comment made by Andy Stanley in 2001?

Moderns vs Pomos

@adammclane recently blogged about church buildings. One of the commenters (Jared) said this:

I think to reach moderns buildings are extremly important, to reach pomos i think they can become a hinderance.

He's speaking of reaching people with the "modern" mindset and those of the "post-modern" mindset. This is an interesting assertion.

Is there a difference in the way you approach "moderns" and "pomos"? If so, what are you doing to reach moderns? What are you doing to reach pomos? Can one church/ministry reach both?

Citizens of Virtue Game

October 20, 2008

What do a missing musician, an organization called the Citizens of Virtue, a lone gardener in Washington state, and you have to do with Rob Bell and Don Golden's new book, Jesus Wants To Save Christians?

Rob Bell and Don Golden's new book, Jesus Wants to Save Christians (www.jesuswantstosavechristians.com), is a provocative, thoughtful book that dares us to look at our nation and ourselves in a new way. The NOOMA series of videos takes the traditional sermon to the next generation by utilizing multimedia to make deeply spiritual messages available in a way not experienced before.

By nature, books are one-way message systems. The authors write and then the audience reads what was written. All authors hope their message connects and will be shared with others, but the process is still basically one-way. Not so for Jesus Wants To Save Christians.

In addition to creating the book, an interactive experience for people who want to actually think about how we treat one another in this world also has been created. Alternate Reality Games have been used to get people involved in the world of a TV show, movie, or video game, but one has never been done before allowing players to involve themselves in a question of religion and empire.

The Citizens of Virtue (www.citizensofvirtue.com) is an organization that claims to do good - it has a new Virtual Virtues campaign that started last week - but what is its agenda really? And will the Citizens succeed...or will the mysterious Seven who question them succeed at their mission? It's up to anyone who wants to get involved to decide the outcome.

People who get involved in this online experience can choose for themselves how they will act, and if they will help. Throughout the experience, players need to solve puzzles, help each other, and make real choices. Players will even get a chance to do actual good in the real world over the course of the experience. And experience a lot of thought-provoking fun in the process.

Traditional advertising, traditional sermons, traditional books - they all get the word out, but people want a chance to get in the sandbox and try things out themselves, and this experience will let them.
