Old Couch Churchology

November 27, 2008

Andy Stanley recently shared how church traditions are like an old couch - when you first bought it, it was awesome and made perfect sense. Now the couch, 20 years later, doesn't work but you're holding on to it b/c it has so much meaning and memories from the past.

Are there couches in your organization that you need to get rid of?

The Fine Line

November 26, 2008

Hey everybody, it's Ken Coleman from the Catalyst Podcast. I'm back! Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know about a new book I think you need to buy and share with others. Kary Oberbrunner has written a refreshing and compelling book called The Fine Line which releases December 5th. You can learn more about it, check out a free sample chapter and read some more impressive endorsements than mine by clicking here. Instead of writing about the book, I am going to talk with Kary about The Fine Line on the next Catalyst Podcast, releasing next week. I will say that pages 22-27 are big time on target and sum up my entire frustration with the body of Christ. Stay tuned for my conversation with Kary on the next Catalyst Podcast.

Generation WE

Here's a brilliant little video that speaks to the upcoming generation and the changing mindset of America.

Generation WE: The Movement Begins... from Generation We on Vimeo

Nevermind the message, what I find interesting is the emphasis on unification, working together, etc. Upcoming generations LONG to work together and be unified, to work toward altruistic goals.

What does that mean for the Church?

The Chapel, My Heart

November 25, 2008

I've been in Orange County for one full week now and am still getting acclimated to this west coast culture...I'm lovin' it!  The crew at Mariners Church have welcomed me in as one of their own, and this past weekend I decided to attend their Sunday night service.  Kyle Zimmerman, the official director of all things awesome :), told me that they were going to have a special time of worship in their new chapel that is currently under construction even as I write this.

I wasn't ready for how the Lord used this special worship time to speaks words of hope and truth...as I was standing in the back corner of the chapel I slowly realized that what i saw before me was a glimpse of what the Lord has been, and is, doing IN me.  This is what I wrote when i got home Sunday night:

The Chapel, My Heart

"The foundation has been laid, the framework is established, the ground around it is tilled and mounds of dirt wait to be evened across this landscape of construction.  It is not what will be.  I've been told of the plans, they are amazing.  But standing in the middle of it all I see is a chaotic disarray of the construction process...hints of what will be dominated by the immediate reality of all that remains to be done.  Yet, even in the lack of completion there is beauty...not just in the hope of what is to come, but in the unfolding of what is becoming new.  And so His promise, once again, comes crashing on the shore of hope, 'that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus!"  It is not, but soon will be...the chapel, my heart."
