If We Are the Body…

November 17, 2008

It seems that most of the ministry happening in our (big "C") Church, is done through paid ministry staff, or lone ranger individuals.

This should not be. We are the body of Christ, every one of us is an IMPORTANT part of the body which the other parts NEED for proper functioning. We all have greater responsibility than just sitting in a pew, inviting a friend, and giving money.

1 Cor 12:7, 14-18 "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good ... the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be."

See also Romans 12, and Eph 4.

What is your part in the body? And how can you work with the other parts around you to advance the Kingdom? Let's get crackin'!

one little tree…

November 13, 2008

Did you hear Matt Chandler's message at the Catalyst Unpluggued session on Wednesday night during this past Catalyst Conference?!  I was listening to it yesterday on my drive from Boulder, CO to Las Vegas, NV along I70 West, and while passing through Utah I was overwhelmed wtih the reality of what Matt was saying.

At one point during Matt's message I found myself faced with a sobering look at the majesty of God and how our part in the greater story isn't even really about us.  "Does He need our help?!  NO!"  What would I do if I fully grasped His majesty and my otherwise unworthy position before Him?  How would I walk through life if I fully understood His greatness and my desperate need for Him...AND THEN, His uncanny faithfulness?!  Is he a fainting goat or a powerful lion?  Am I really invited to know Him?

I pulled over to get out of the car and just sit in this paralyzing truth...I walked over to a ledge and looked out across the horizon.  This was the image I saw...

one little tree...

one little tree...

One little tree dwarfed by the horizon of towering mountains...captivated by the majestic sight. Am I any different when I gaze on the glory of God? He is captivating, He is good...

Ed Stetzer in a fight with AL

It's kind of embarassing, AL and Ed have been bickering back and forth for about a month now. You may have seen their argument spilling over onto Twitter: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=onlyal

You can actually see part of their argument last week here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxgPMYqsRY4&feature=related

Today they really got into it, and got it on video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-96a8LuuUU

Ed's argument is that it's become all about Al, and he's trying to be hip rather than going and living out the gospel.

What does the election of Obama say about our culture?

Gabe Lyons, in a recent blog post, spoke about the spiritual state of our nation as reflected in the recent election:

If you care to listen, people in American culture are making their voice heard loud and clear. They want significance, they want to fix things broken in society, they want to fight injustice, they want peace and prosperity, they want change. Undoubtedly, intelligent people will debate for years about whether an Obama Presidency will fulfill the ultimate desire they have, but the fact remains - a majority of our society chose Barack Obama as the embodiment of that hope.

It's a deeply spiritual statement about where our culture is. One that should encourage the faithful everywhere.

That's a really interesting take. Does this mean we have a good opportunity, or we haven't done our job?
