Your Roommate is Stealing from You

January 19, 2009

What is the proper Christian response to a roommate who is stealing from you?
What if you and your other roommates confront him and he continues to lie about it?
What if he finally admits it - do you press charges? or just ask for the stuff back? Or completely forgive him altogether?

This happened to me last night.
Over the last couple weeks our house of 6 guys has been having stuff stolen from the house - totalling: 1 xbox, 2 laptops & $420. We found some of it under his bed, and still he denied it. Finally, when we threatened to call the cops, he confessed and said he’d get our stuff back.

It was ugly! Hopefully we’re all still saved after last night.

I’m still wondering, after last night, - as a Christian - should I just let him keep my laptop? He works at Taco Bell, and couldn’t pay rent this month (his first month with us) - but he drives a newish Lincoln Something, and has some expensive stuff.

Also, should we press charges? I don’t want to, none of us do. But I kept thinking about that verse where God says he doesn’t like when the innocent are punished and the guilty acquitted. (although he acquitted me, right?)

Have you ever faced this situation? What do you think?

Catalyst Vanagon

San Diego, Yuma, Phoenix - Not As Planned…

January 17, 2009

Welcome to AZI was supposed to be healthy in San Diego, I was supposed to drive THROUGH Yuma, I was supposed to visit Tucson, I was supposed to see MANY more leaders on this road trip...and they were supposed to see the Vanagon!  But the plans that were established going into this road trip were quickly derailed...and an unplanned journey slowly unfolded.

Good news is I am feeling much better now, and so is the Vanagon; she has a new cylinder head, thermostat, and fresh coolant!  Amidst my disappointment and frsturation that I wasn't able to spend time with the people I had planned to meet with in San Diego and several major cities in AZ I was able to meet with a few leaders that have now become close friends.

Here is a brief recap of the people I WAS able to meet with during this crazy road trip:

San Diego
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
(videos coming...)

Arizona (planned for 5 days in AZ, ended up being 8 days)

Austin Gutwein & Family (Dan & Denise, parents) - Founders of Hoops of Hope

Jeff Smal - Executive Pastor at Central Christian Church of the East Valley

Brian Wurzell - Worship Pastor at Cornerstone Church in Chandler, AZ

Staff of Cornerstone Church in Chandler, AZ

Gary Kinnaman - author, speaker, and long time pastor in the Phoenix area

2009 GOALS: WEEK 2!

January 16, 2009

We're talking about GOALS! Let's make 2009 better than 2008!

If you want to be successful and intentionally make a difference, it helps to have goals.

The goal for January is to GET IN A GROUP!
A group of people who care about you, people with whom you can share your biggest struggles and successes. People who will encourage you in your goals and help you Get Things Done this year.

Goal 1, last week, was to brainstorm a list of people that you could form this kind of group with, and call them. If you didn't do that, there's still time! pull out your pen and paper, make a list of at least 10 names. Call them. Really you only want a group of 3 or 4.

Goal 2: Have a practice meeting with a few of these people. The idea is to find 2 other people that can commit to meeting with you for at least 6 months, if not the entire year. Feel these people out, you don't want to jump-in with someone that bails out next month. Ask God to bring you the people that will help you grow and that you can help grow. Finding this group will really help with later goals, so let's focus on that again this week too. If you already have your guys/girls, then take this week to decide when your first meeting will be, how often you'll meet (we recommend weekly) and where.

This is your life! You are part of the body, uniquely gifted and fashioned to do specific stuff with other body members for the Kingdom! Don't waste another year, get in a group and LET'S GO!

Do you have any other goals for this year?
