The Church Needs to get Angry?

May 29, 2009

About injustice.

We're already pretty angry about abortion and gay marriage.

Eugene Cho blogs here about getting angry over the issue of human trafficking:

Is it possible that we as Christians just aren’t angry enough about injustices like human trafficking and slavery?  Perhaps, we’ve grown too desensitized, domesticated, and docile. I’m not trying to say this for the sake of the ’shock factor’ but I really believe there are times when the Church needs to have a deep[er] anger about the grave injustices of the world particularly when it involves the exploitation of children. Have we deduced our faith to convenient and self serving pleasantries?

What do you think we should be angry about?

Are you Giving Out?

May 28, 2009

Craig Groeschel blogged today about being a generous church.

I am not as focused on what our church can “bring in” financially, but what we can “give out.”

For years I said to myself, “One day, when we have ____________, we’ll be more generous.” The words in the blank changed over time.

  • One day when we have a real building…
  • One day when we have a bigger staff…
  • One day when we have the building paid off…
  • One day when we complete the new phase…
  • One day when we add these new campuses…

Read the whole blog post here.

Are you waiting on something to be a more generous church? How can you be more generous now?

Coaching is the New Discipleship

May 27, 2009

Not really. But there are lots of coaching and learning opportunities sprouting-up all over the place. These are chances to learn leaderships skills from some amazing leaders in the Kingdom.

Here are a few:

Carlos Whittaker
Service Programming Director at Buckhead Church, Uber Blogger, creative super-star and all-around nice guy

Carlos is starting a coaching network for creatives in the Church. It will be broken into a few groups of 5 members each. You will get group coaching and one-on-one time with Carlos. Check the deets here. Do it now, spots are filling fast.

Tony Morgan Summer Tour

Former Executive Pastor at NewSpring Community Church, Uber Blogger, Author of Killing Cockroaches, master of leadership and strategery

Tony is leading a Summer Tour for his new book, and he'll be teaching you invaluable leadership principles. Go here for the dates and deets. Okay, so this isn't a coaching network at all. But I'm sure he'd be open to it if enough people ask him on twitter: @tonymorganlive

Backstage Leadership

A new online coaching network where you can learn from and interact with top Church leaders, including: Chuck Colson, Mark Batterson, Gabe Lyons, and Mike Foster.

For more details, go to BackstageLeadership.org.

Heck, if you have anything helpful to say to less experienced leaders, maybe you should start a coaching network.
Know any other good coaching opportunities out there? Say so in the comments.

Is Social Media Empty?

May 26, 2009

Recently read an article about a small community of couples that has been meeting together, weekly, for over 20 years. They experience such delicious community together. They should, they've earned it.

The social media craze that has emerged lately purports to help you meet your need for community - it connects you to sooooo many more people than you could meet otherwise.

BUT ... it doesn't feel like we all have more "community" as a result - at least the kind of community that our souls crave. Perhaps true community, that meets our desire to know and be known, can only come over time, thru challenges, arguments, disagreements, sacrifices - the exact opposite of what our culture is looking for.

Perhaps Facebook and the like provide the microwave, McDonald's version of community?

So what? If there is a craving for community that is being unmet in hearts all around us, what can the Church do to engage people in the true, life giving, community we read about in the bible?

What are your thoughts?

“Social Justice” - A Trend In The Church???

You've already heard from Charles Lee on topics covering leadership and church planting...now check out what Charles says about the church's increasing emphasis on "social justice." Is it a fad, a trend? How do we do it the "right" way...how do we engage social issues for the long haul?  Charles has worked with college students for years and has recently planted a church South Bay, CA...this is great insight on what is happening on the front line of next generation leaders who want to impact their community.

"It's not about how many causes you are affiliated with from a distance...it's about how your lifestyle changes to impact people one person at a time," Charles Lee.  Are we content with simply clicking the "join cause" link on facebook?  Is our compassion, at best, distant?  Are we really willing to get our hands dirty in areas of social justice that are right before our eyes?
