The Failure of Church Marketing

May 13, 2009

A recent article from Wrecked.org: The Failure of Church Marketing:

"Bottom line:  The more churches I visit the more I realize we are less and less wrestling with heart-formation and more and more obsessing over how to market  ourselves"

Church Marketing Sucks made some comments here.

It's been a purposeful and fun ride, but have we taken the "relevant" thing too far? Are our churches discipling people in such a way that we produce "little Christs" that are living out His values ... OR just apathetic, self-centered, consumerist "Christians" that look nothing like Christ? Or somewhere in the middle? What do you think?

Catalyst Voices - Miles McPherson (1 of 2)

May 12, 2009

During the Catalyst Road Trip visit to San Diego I had the chance to sit down with Miles McPherson, Senior Pastor of The Rock Church. In this video I ask Miles about the dynamics of evangelism in our culture today AND what he would say to himself if he could go back to the early years of his ministry.

Tomorrow will feature the second part of our interview with Pastor Miles...

Groeschel Questioning the “Relevant” Movement

In a recent blog post, Craig Groeschel said:

"While the intentions of most relevant pastors (including my own) are generally to reach those who don’t know Christ, we have to ask ourselves, “How effective are our ministries really?” Just because we are “growing” numerically doesn’t mean the people coming are growing spiritually."

"This week, let’s respectfully discuss some possible corrections for the 'relevant church.'"

Last Week for the Catalyst Vanagon in California!

May 11, 2009

Every season must come to an end...the West Coast Catalyst Road Trip has crossed the finish line and the Catalyst Vanagon is going back to Atlanta, GA this Friday morning.  This week will feature past interviews with west coast leaders taken during the last 7 months of our west coast road trip adventures and will include a NEW VANAGON RECORD VIDEO highlighting the latest "how many people can we get in the Vanagon" record breaking moment!

Sorry Keith and company from Journey Church in Bend, OR...I know you thought your record (45) was unbeatable, but there is a new champion.  How many people you ask?!  You will have to wait and see...

At the end of May I will be traveling back to Atlanta to talk to the team about what's next for me and the Catalyst Vanagon.  Stay tuned...for now here is a look back at the Catalyst Road Trip visit to Bend, OR!
