Free Stuff!

July 27, 2009

Chuck Warnock's latest post:

Free Article, Journal, Video and Book, tell you where to get some cool free resources!

He mentions that the hot new book "FREE" by the editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine, is free in some forms:

After studying what other authors had done with free digital books, my publisher and I decided to make FREE free in as many formats as possible to encourage sampling without competing too much with the premium hardcover. It's free on Google Books, Scribd, the Amazon Kindle (and Kindle iPhone app) and Shortcovers (these are time limited, from one week to one month). The full unabridged audiobook is free at iTunes, Audible.com and as downloadable MP3s at Wired.com (no time limits).

Catalyst MeetUp: Collaboration

July 26, 2009

Here's a clip from Craig Groeschel's talk at Catalyst West Coast. He talks the need for churches to collaborate to build the Kingdom rather than compete.

We will be discussing these ideas at the meetup. Here are some questions to consider:

+ Is there competition in the church community here in Atlanta? If so, what causes this?

+ What are the benefits of collaboration vs competition or just working in silos?

+ What are you/your team/your church good at that will compliment others?

+ How can we work together? And how can we encourage more collaboration in the Kingdom?

The Sabbath was Made for Man

July 24, 2009

The 10 Commandments are some Vintage thoughts that “never go out of style.” Buried in the list in the #4 spot is this huge blessing that sadly gets overlooked often in the church world today. It’s the Sabbath: taking a day off. It’s easy to run to the two extremes of legalism or liberality when it comes to taking a day off. I’ve learned a lot about the Sabbath over the years and I hope the following thoughts will be helpful to you.

1.  God gave us the 10 Commandments to keep us free, not put us in bondage again.

It’s always important to remember that God didn’t give the 10 Commandments to make us feel guilty or to make us bound up to the little details. Instead, He gave them to us to help us stay free from bondage.  Therefore, when it comes to taking a day off, God doesn’t want us to be all bound up with rules like, “I can’t mow my yard, or clean out the pantry…” Those are rules that put us in bondage again.

2.  The Sabbath is all about Restoration.

I have always viewed the Sabbath as “a day with no work.” I mean my typical work. For me of course, that’s ministry. So if I check my e-mail and it puts me into “Work Mode” then I probably shouldn’t do that. Make sense? Here’s another illustration from my life.

I love to write. In fact, I feel as called to write, as I do to pastor, which is a cool thing! When I write, I feel strong. So… for a long time, I used to love to write on my day off. It would recharge me, I would feel like a million bucks, etc. However, a few years ago, when I started writing, “The Up the Middle Church” (www.UptheMiddle.com) I suddenly turned my hobby into a job. So for me, I had to stop writing on my day off because it was more like work, then restoration.

3.  Do things on your Sabbath that make you feel strong & restore you.

For a long time, playing golf made me feel strong. I loved being outside and walking around exercising. After a while, golf no longer made me feel strong, instead I started coming home more frustrated than relaxed. Conclusion: I gave up golf on my Sabbath. Spend time on your Sabbath doing things that restore you. If reading restores you, do that. If it doesn’t, than don’t. If gardening restores you, do that. If not, than don’t.

4.  Find a hobby that you can’t turn into a job.

I highly recommend that everyone get a hobby that looks nothing like your life. Something you can completely escape in and you have NO WAY to turn it into a job. For me, it’s baseball. I love to go to Major League Parks because they look nothing like my life. I love the statistical side of the game. I love the history of the game. I love the fullness of summer in the air. I love that there is movement everyday. I love that there are 2,430 games every season and everyone of them matters. Baseball is my hobby. And as of yet, I haven’t figured out a way to turn it into a job.

When it comes to your Sabbath, remember the Spirit of the law is greater than the Letter of the law. If you ever feel yourself being led toward guilt or bondage, that’s not God and that’s not the point.

May you enjoy your day off this week, I’m intending to enjoy mine,

- Matt

Video Teaching is Now Free

July 23, 2009

Thanks to the Kingdom minded geniuses at LifeChurch.tv, a new website exists that lets you share and download BILLIONS of sermons on video, for your church, for FREE!

It's VideoTeaching.com

This is amazing on so many levels. As Andy Crouch always asks, "How will this change the boundaries of what's possible and impossible?"

Possible:
- Find great teaching, expertly communicated and show to your church on video
- Maybe more churches can be started faster w/out needing amazing communicators
- Easy way to find a video replacement for your communicator if they're gone or sick.
- FREE access to tons of good teaching
- Might help communicators better learn from and analyze communication style of expert communicators.
- Every video projector in a living room can become a video venue - small groups and house churches can watch Great sermons whenever they want, for free

Impossible:
- If people can just watch it online, will greater numbers of people stop going to a meeting and tithing?
- It will become less possible to charge money for sermon and teaching videos now, perhaps - b/c you can get it for free here.
- Is it now less possible to "put-up with" poor quality teaching?
- Will it become less possible to find an actual pastor teaching at a church, instead of a video screen?
- Will it become less possible to expect a pastor to have a real connection with his supposed "flock," the people he is supposedly caring for?

All of the above are just suggestions - some of which I totally disagree with.

What do you think? What are you excited (or sad) about regarding VideoTeaching.com?
