The Officially-Unofficial Guide Catalyst Conference Survival Guide

September 11, 2009

ChurchCrunch.com is an awesome blog--essential really.  In today's post, @Human3rror gives you the Officially-Unofficial guide to getting the most out of your Catalyst experience.

Here are a few of his tips:

- Mobile device (can you say iPhone?) is essential. Please don’t embarrass yourself by not having one.

- Don’t forget your clothes and some extra underwear cause you may drop a bomb (and I don’t mean figuratively) during the keynotes.

- Prep your Twitter-streams...the official hashtag is #CAT09.

- Turn down your device’s brightness setting. That stuff blinds foo! And it’s obnoxious. It’ll also make your device last longer, so there’s utility here folks.

- Bring some meds cause you’re going to get head-knocked by awesomeness.

A D.C. Conversation…

September 10, 2009

Pastor T.L. Rogers and his son, Pastor Perrin Rogers from Triumphant Baptist Church in Hyattsville, invited us into their Maryland home last week during our trip to Washington D.C.  There weren't many African-American pastors attending Catalyst West Coast this past April...T.L., Perrin, and Joshua were there, and during our time with them last week they shared with us about some crazy connections that have unfolded through their Catalyst story AND how they have seen some amazing opportunities to partner with International Justice Mission...this is a fun story.

Pastor T.L. Rogers & Pastor Perrin Rogers - Triumphant Baptist Church

Airplane, Podcast, Conference, & Social Justice!

How do you pass the leadesrhip baton?
Pastor T.L. has already set in motion a plan to pass the baton of leadership to his son, Perrin.  He shares about this process AND you will hear an unexpected encouragement from Pastor T.L.,"we must glean from other cultures..."

Resistance Never Sleeps

I'm reading The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. He talks of "Resistance" - an almost spiritual force within you that fights against you purusing your calling.

"Resistance Never Sleeps

Henry Fonda was still throwing up before each stage performance, even when he was seventy-five. In other words, fear doesn't go away. The Warrior and the artist live by the same code of necessity, which dictates that the battle must be fought anew every day."

Sound familiar?

Fight the battle today! It's worth it.

A Voice You Need To Hear…

September 09, 2009

The 1960's...

  • On the heels of The U.S. Supreme Court outlawing public school segregation (Brown vs. Board of Education).
  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers his famous "I Have A Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting discrimination, is signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965 passed.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is assinated sparking riots lasting days throughout Washington D.C.
  • The Civil Rights Act of 1968 is signed by Johnson.
  • A 19yr. old African-American leader named Alfred A. Owens, Jr. starts a church in D.C. now known as Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church

Bishop Alfred A. Owens, Jr. - Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church
Amidst the waves of racial tension in a city on the brink of historic cultural shift a young African-American leader (19 years old) dared to start a church in Washington D.C. ... 43 years later Bishop Alfred A. Owens, Jr. humbly leads Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church, the single largest African-American church in the downtown D.C. area.  Bishop Owens raised his voice for the gospel in a volatile city during a volatile time & fought the odds to extend love and truth to his community.  I was surprised to hear that we had an opportunity to meet with Bishop Owens...it was, and remains, an honor to sit with him and learn from him and his leadership journey.  Listen as Joshua Symonette, friend of Catalyst and student of Bishop Owens, interviews a man who has seen more in his lifetime than most of us could imagine...

"What's it like to lead & pastor in the heart of the city?"

Bishop Owens, Back to 1966...His Early Years & Personal Life

"How have you been able to pastor for 43 years at the same church?!  What's kept you going?"
AND A Final Though for the Catalyst Audience...
