The Best Leadership Advice

July 30, 2010

This is a guest blog post from Lindsey Nobles. She's the rockstar Director of Communications for Thomas Nelson Publishing.

I work for a leadership sage. Really, I do. Five days a week, I roll out of bed and stumble to work where I have the opportunity to learn about publishing, communication, and life from a man who has earned every bit of his extraordinary influence.

And so I hear a lot of nuggets.

I should do a better job of documenting the greatness, of soaking up every word he utters. Unfortunately, like anything that is bestowed in abundance, most days his words are digested and not properly savored.

But one day, several weeks ago, as he spoke to a group of Owen Graduate School of Management students, Michael Hyatt shared the best piece of advice I’ve ever heard,

“You don’t know as much as you think you do. BUT you are capable of more than you can possibly imagine.”

And I’m still chewing on it.

What I love about these two simple sentences is that they get to the heart of the two things that have the ability to limit my success in life, and in leadership.

Pride.

And.

Fear.

I NEED to be reminded that I don’t know as much as I think I know.

I need to approach my days with humility.

I need to learn the art of listening with an open heart, and an open mind.

And I NEED to be reminded that I am capable of more than I can would ever dare to imagine.

My fear limits my possibilities, my dreams, and my faith.

I need to cultivate a spirit of confidence and a spirit of hopefulness.

If you struggle with pride and fear, I encourage you to jot this down and remember, “you don’t know as much as you think you do. But you are capable of more than you can possibly imagine” with Him at your side.

A special thanks to Michael Hyatt for teaching me, through words and through action, how to be a leader.

What is the best leadership advice you’ve ever heard?

What’s Your Personal Development Plan? Share it!

July 29, 2010

Our friend Ron Edmondson had a great post this morning: 3 Questions to Write a Personal Development Plan.

It's not easy to create a Personal Development Plan. Well, it's easy, but not everyone does it.

Leaders, let's help each other out here - share with us: What is your Personal Development Plan? Take two minutes & share parts of it in the comments below. Do it.

Remember, if you aim at nothing, you'll hit it every time.

(FULL DISCLOSURE: at this point in the blog, I should share my personal development plan. I have no specific plan. A weakness I need to work on. Help me by sharing yours in the comments below. :)

Climb 4 Captives

Climb 4 Captives
August 23rd & 24th
Mt. Rainer - Seattle, WA

Some of our friends from the Great Northwest are engaging the global fight against human trafficking in a unique way...they are putting their own lives on the line and climbing Mt. Rainer next month, two days before Catalyst One Day Seattle.

Every dollar that Del Chittim and the Climb 4 Captives team raises throughout this campaign will go to International Justice Mission's efforts to free slaves and prosecute perpetrators in Mumbai, India.

These guys are insane...and amazing, check out their video from 2009:

Climb 4 Captives 2009 Summit

The Climb 4 Captives 2010 goal is to raise $40,000 which is projected to rescue 18 victims of human trafficking, place them in an aftercare recovery home, and prosecute 34 criminals responsible for the injustice.

Jason Haynes, Catalyst Project Manager & "Dallas Willard Wanna-Be," and I are hoping to be with the Climb 4 Captives team up to Camp Muir where we will send them off to the summit.

Collaboration in the Church

July 28, 2010

Here's a great clip from Craig Groeschel's talk at Catalyst West 2009! He talks about competition in the Church, the need for collaboration, and how one time he pretended to be a non-Christian while some guy was witnessing to him! This is a GREAT clip, we love Craig's heart!

Questions for Consideration:

+ What are the benefits of collaboration vs competition or just working in silos?

+ What are you/your team/your church good at that will compliment others?

+ How can we work together? And how can we encourage more collaboration in the Kingdom?

July 27, 2010

A few Random thoughts on What’s In and What’s Out in Leadership:

Command and Control is out.

Management by position is out.

Wait until you’re “old enough” to really lead is out.

Top Down Hierarchy structure is out.

Power as the ultimate expression of leadership is out.

One career in one industry with one employer in one location is out.

Working your way up the “corporate ladder” is out.

“My way or the highway” is out

Authenticity is in.

Flat organizational structure and systems are in.

Management by skill and know how vs. position is in.

Lead as soon as you are ready is in.

Relational equity as a major asset is in.

Entrepreneurial spirit, boot-strap mentality, and do it yourself attitude is in.

Generosity, sharing, serving, and “giving it away” is in.

Free Agency and “project” based careers are in.

Seasons of calling vs. a Lifetime of calling is in.
