This piece has been put in your hand because you're trying to decide if this is really what you're supposed to do. Before we go any further, let's get one thing perfectly clear. You are not Belshazzar the King. Seriously, if I meet one more would-be Church Planter who's waiting for God to 'write on the wall' before he and his wife take the leap into the great unknown, I'm going to have to quit doing what I do and become a 'motivational speaker'. You are not a King. You are not a Prophet. You are not an Apostle. You are one simple soul who's feeling called to walk out the Divine Missional Partnership with God in a specific manner, that being: to copy the Creator in the smallest of ways by creating 'something from nothing' a Church where previously there was no Church... This is the opening paragraph from a very interesting article over at the
Acts 29 Network. So...how do you know when you SHOULDN'T plant a church?
I am not sure if I can explain “How to know when not to plant a church” because I am a future church planter. For me it started with a small desire (I tried to ignore). Later I received the name Redeemer’s Way Church. Before I knew it, I had a passion that is with me 24/7 to reach the hurting with the redemption of Christ. There is no hand writing on the wall, not even a complete vision. But as I am obedient and act on what I know, God continues to reveal more, a little bit at a time. To know if you should plant is really between you and God. Do not expect all the answers all at once, or some earth shattering vision. Be obedient to what you do know, and God will reveal the rest. Our walk with Christ is a daily process not an event.

I recently planted a church - it has redefined my entire being. I love it, I think it, I breathe it, it has consumed me. Kingdom of God stuff starts small and it grows - it is like a seed. Since the heading of this section is “How to know when you are not supposed to plant a church,” here are my thoughts on the subject. Don’t plant because you are angry at your current church. Angry people only make others angry. Don’t plant if you are not sent. If other leaders in the Body of Christ that have mentored you are not saying your ready - you probably aren’t. Don’t plant if you can’t peel yourself away from your x-box. It takes great motivation to tend a church plant.
