Is Social Media Empty?

May 26, 2009

Recently read an article about a small community of couples that has been meeting together, weekly, for over 20 years. They experience such delicious community together. They should, they've earned it.

The social media craze that has emerged lately purports to help you meet your need for community - it connects you to sooooo many more people than you could meet otherwise.

BUT ... it doesn't feel like we all have more "community" as a result - at least the kind of community that our souls crave. Perhaps true community, that meets our desire to know and be known, can only come over time, thru challenges, arguments, disagreements, sacrifices - the exact opposite of what our culture is looking for.

Perhaps Facebook and the like provide the microwave, McDonald's version of community?

So what? If there is a craving for community that is being unmet in hearts all around us, what can the Church do to engage people in the true, life giving, community we read about in the bible?

What are your thoughts?
