(from Thursday July 17 - Myrtle Beach, SC)
Truth be told - this specific road trip into the northeast was planned around a road trip gathering in Myrtle Beach, SC. Because each road trip depends on volunteer Vanagon Vagabonds and their limited vacation time (thanks Mack & Tripp) we have to work with a limited time frame. Julia McBride, Charles Fox, and the numerous Catalyst leaders in Myrtle Beach, SC invited us to their hometown for a gathering, and we wanted to make them part of a northeast road trip. We only had 8 days which made for a whirlwind tour through the New England region so that we could make it to Myrtle Beach by 5PM Thursday, July 17th. We left D.C. this morning around 7AM, made a stop near Philadelphia for world famous philly cheesesteaks, and then into the land of Palmetto Palm Trees (the offical state tree of South Carolina!)
The story of the Catalyst movement in Myrtle Beach centers around the legacy of one man, Charlie McBride. This page does not hold enough space to adequately tell the story of Charlie McBride, but you must know that his passion for the Lord and his passion for developing leaders continues to reverberate through South Carolina. Charlie was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2006; at that time he was planning on coming to Catalyst and planning on leading the largest single group of Catalyst attendees to date. The cancer progressed quickly leaving him unable to make it to the Catalyst Conference in Atlanta. Shortly after the October conference we received a call that stopped activity at the Catalyst office...Charlie was no longer fighting cancer, he was Home. Over 100 people have been coming to Catalyst each year because of Charlie's influence and overwhelming commitment to raise up young leaders. We still talk about Charlie and will not quickly forget his legacy. Julia, his wife, continues to pour into young leaders...she is working with key influencers in Myrtle Beach, like Charles Fox, to continue investing in the next generation. It is a gift to be able to work with this team.
Charles Fox rallied a group of about 70 people to meet us at Carolina Forest Community Church where we were able to share some stories about the road trip, tell a little more of the Catlayst Road Trip story, and celebrate the life of Charlie McBride. Charles shared a video with us highlighting the testimony of one man who has been significantly impacted through what the Lord has done in the Myrtle Beach community. Thanks is not an adequate expression when speaking to Julia, Charles, and to Charlie for what they have done to impact their community.
