Rest

February 23, 2009

This past weekend I was able to enjoy two full days of rest, a rarity given the last two months of life on the road.  And then I wondered how rare this must be for leaders on the front line of church:

  • "There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.  Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience."          (Hebews 4:9-11)

Anne Jackson Shaun GrovesOne week ago today I was invited to be part of a very special worship night at Mariners Church in Irvine, CA...a night hosted by Anne Jackson and Shaun Groves...a night of rest.  How difficult is it to carve out time for rest?  I guess the epidiemic of "burnout" in the church is a sobering answer.

In a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, Anne read from her book, Mad Church Disease, and Shaun sang.  It was a time to enjoy great writing and great music, with no expectation of anything from the audience.

Read Mad Church Disease.  Listen to Shaun Groves.  But above all, please, make time to enjoy moments of rest.

Here is a clip from the night, and the picture (above) was taken with Anne, Crystal, and Shaun in the Catalyst Vanagon!  Thanks again to the crew at Mariners Church for hosting us...

  1. I recently wrote about this very thing.  bethbrawleytaylor.blogspot.com/2009/02/leadership-lesson-from-chef.html.  It is vitally important for leaders to rest.  Great post!
