TWITTER recently dumped about 10% of my list of people I'm following - and I can't remember who I lost! This blog post is an attempt to compile a list of the Top Tweeters and Church Leaders that are tweetin' it up - as many influential Church leaders as possible.
So here's a list, in no particular order (no hurt feelings please - if you're not on here, add yourself in the comments!!)
CatalystAtlanta - this goes without saying
Carlos Whitaker - SPD at Buckhead Church
Tony Morgan - Chief Strategic Officer at NewSpring.cc
Perry Noble - Senior Pastor at NewSpring.cc
Tim Stevens - Executive Pastor at Granger Community Church
Todd Rhoades - Christian Blogger - Leadership Network dude
DJ Chuang - Leadership Network and Technology Guy
Bobby Gruenwald - Executive Pastor of LifeChurch.tv
Terry Storch - Chief Diggerati for LifeChurch.tv
Ed Stetzer - blogger, church planting expert, President of LifeWay Research
Jeff Henderson - Campus Director of Buckhead Church
Donald Miller - Who's that?
Cameron Strang - Executive Pastor of RELEVANT Magazine
Mark Batterson - Author and Pastor of National Community Church
Kem Meyer - Communications Director at GCC
Doug Fields - King of Simply Youth Ministry
Mike Foster - Founder XXXChurch, Ethur, Junky Car Club, Deadly Viper Character Assasins
Andy Crouch - Culture Making, author, speaker
Scott Hodge - Pastor The Orchard and major blogger
Dino Rizzo - Pastor The Healing Place Church & Co-founder of Association of Related Churches
Tadd Grandstaff - Lead Pastor of Pine Ridge Church
Dave Ferguson - Pastor Community Christian Church, blogger, author
Mark Driscoll - Senior Pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle
Brad Abare - Founder Church Marketing Sucks.com, Center For Church Communication, and more
Chris Elrod - Comedian and Pastor of Compass Point Church
Dan Kimball - Pastor of Vintage Faith, author
This list is in no order and is totally not comprehensive.
What other big names in the Church world are you following on Twitter?
Authors, pastors, thinkers, speakers?
People one might want to follow:
Rob Bell, Andy Stanley, Brenda McNeil, Craig Groeschel, Craig Gross, Dave Kinnaman, Gabe Lyons, Priscilla Shirer, Brian McLaren, The Ortbergs, Billy Hybels, John Burke, Franklin Graham, Steve Fee, John Macarthur, Tim Willard, Nooma, Matt Chandler, Francis Chan, Louie Giglio, Erwin, Crowder, Rick McKinley, Chris Seay, Morgenthaler, Len Sweet,

Nice list, however I have a hard time following people on twitter who don’t follow anyone else. To me it’s part of the “social” network. Posting, sharing, replying. I really appreciate guys like Ron Sylvia and Hal Mayer who reply back to posts and share ideas on twitter. Tony Morgan has done well with that as well as Carlos Whitaker and other. If I just simply want to read what you are thinking, I’ll read your blog. If you are posting on Twitter, I’m expecting interaction.
Don Miller and Dan Kimball don’t follow anyone, and the Catalyst twitter only follows 3. I’m not saying follow everyone who follows you, but you can definitely tell a lot about a Twitter by who they follow.
Personally I have a mix of ministry professionals, tech gurus, and people in the comics, pop culture, and podcasting world.
If you want to follow me (a pastor, podcaster, comics writer, husband.) feel free to look me up @RadioWayne

I’ve written Margaret Feinberg requesting tweets because I like her words. Maybe if more requests come in she’ll start.
And another comment… rather than “big names” I like following those who add to my world. So I have personal favorites:
http://twitter.com/tonysteward (visionary genius)
http://twitter.com/kevinhendricks (clever wordsmith/funny dad)
http://twitter.com/rkweblog (worship leader/pastor)
http://twitter.com/scottmcclellan (COLLIDE editor)
http://twitter.com/kmckeaigg (Worship House Media)
http://twitter.com/churchymike (Churchy Media)
http://twitter.com/churchydave (Churchy Media)

and… well, now that we’re into “resources” the list could get very long….

Mark Driscoll doesn’t actually post on his own Twitter account (http://twitter.com/PastorMark/statuses/834800114). Not sure how much he directs other people to for him. Usually is just a communications channel for Mars Hill Church.

Thanks Anne, Cynthia, Kent, HolyCow for your comments. you too Chris. We’ll start following y’all right away. You can follow me at twitter.com/jessephillips if you like!

hey RadioWayne, thanks for your comments…really appreciate your thoughts. we are going to spend a little more time intentionally using twitter; Jesse does a great job of interacting with people on the blog and also on twitter and I am going to step it up a bit…you’re right, a social network is only a social network when there is interaction, thanks again!

I’m not sure if I want some of you to follow me. You seem like a rather shady bunch.
I enjoy following some of the pastors with larger churches just to find out how they are spending their days. I must say, some of them are in ALOT of meetings!
And flowerdust, you are one of my favorites. You bring a smile to my ugly ol’ face!

I’m not a pastor, but I love catalyst—been going for years! I love studying other church leaders, and I am a pretty passionate volunteer for my church. Lawyer by day, but that’s not the point. You can follow me on twitter, too: twitter.com/Toby_Hunt

Comment by Toby - Jul 29, 2008 @ 10:32 AM
Hey LV & Jesse,
Thanks for the words. I was afraid I was coming off too harsh. Twitter is a beautiful thing (when it’s working), and I just keep seeing the community grow and grow.
Instead of a time waster, I actually think it’s made me more productive. Not only am I getting great links to help me learn as a leader, but It’s a community I can call out to for help.
I posted just yesterday about needing a vector image of the Staples “Easy Button” for an upcoming series logo I’m designing.
within a couple of hours, I had a “Twitter Follower” send me what I needed.
Maybe the next blog and “Comment Conversation” could be about how we all use Twitter to make us more productive and connected leaders?

Totally agree about those who don’t listen back. I noticed that as I went through some on the list. I remembered unfollowing at least one of these guys a while back because I realized he didn’t listen, just talked. That’s when I disconnect. Not that one’s follow/follower ratio should be 1:1, but it also shouldn’t be hundreds:very few.
Comment by Rob Williams - Jul 29, 2008 @ 12:25 PM
Thom, wow. Thank you!!!
@Rob - as one who twitters that is hundreds: very few…just because I don’t technically follow people doesn’t mean I don’t read them or interact and I think others in that boat can do the same… I *love* the “reply” tab on twitter…so if someone does reply to me who I don’t follow, we can interact that way, and I also love reading down people’s pages…I just have a rule to only follow people I actually know to some extent. Otherwise I have no self control and would be sucked into a twitterstorm!!! But I agree - it is no fun without the interaction.
Comment by Anne Jackson - Jul 29, 2008 @ 12:52 PM
Thanks Guys - you are awesome! I appreciate you putting me on that list!! Can’t wait for Catalyst this year!!
Comment by Tadd Grandstaff - Jul 29, 2008 @ 12:54 PM
@Anne- I can totally understand where you’re coming from. At first I only wanted to follow people I know. But then I found others that had interesting things to share so I followed them. Curious, how do you know who to read and reply when you’re not subscribed to them? How do you know what pages to go visit to catch up? I guess I’m curious about your system then since it’s totally different from mine. I actually just wrote on my personal blog about calming the twitter noise (and importance of bio info): http://rob.orangejack.com/?s=twitter
I will say though that first impressions are huge when I go to someone’s twitter page. If I don’t know them and see they aren’t following many or any, it makes me wonder what they are up to. But I guess it’s better than the other way around!
Comment by Rob Williams - Jul 29, 2008 @ 01:04 PM
@Rob…I am all about systems so it’s taken a year to tweak it but I think I have it where it works for me…
1. I only check twitter from the web. Only a very small group of people come directly to my phone (my husband, my boss, a few coworkers and two good friends). So I login in and catch up with the people I follow first.
2. I check the reply tab to see who all has replied to something I’ve said and if needed, I reply to them.
3. Most of the bloggers I follow have updates sent to their blogs and/or their facebooks, so when I am browsing blogs or FB, i catch up there.
4. Many of the people I follow talk about people like - Hey, @soandso, you are awesome. Since I can see their username and my friend said they’re awesome, I’ll click over to check them out. And it’s pretty easy to just click through other people’s followers or followees to just browse what’s up…like I would a blog/blogroll.
5. I also track certain phrases that I am interested in….like “track cross point” or “track mad church disease” so if someone tweets about that, whether I follow them or not, it pings me.
I know that sounds really complicated but I know for me, it’s the best way for me to interact and allow Twitter to be completely functional…I did the “subscribe to everyone” thing and that lasted about two days because I couldn’t keep track of everything…which made Twitter, as a tool, completely purposeless!
Comment by Anne Jackson - Jul 29, 2008 @ 01:12 PM
I like your list actually, captured a few that I didn’t have yet. I simply won’t follow people who don’t follow me back. So names on there with 1000 followers but only follow 3. Those aren’t really twitter users!
Feel free to add me: http://twitter.com/mclanea
Comment by Adam McLane - Jul 29, 2008 @ 01:19 PM
@Anne - excellent! That does make sense. Your first point is similar to what I do so we’re actually fairly on the same system. There are just so many things to monitor nowadays with RSS readers, Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed, etc. I like learning other people’s habits and systems.
BTW, I like your blog and sub’ed to it. And your twitter ;-)
And I’m rethinking how I mentioned the ratio thing. What I should have said is that it’s not so much the ratio in that direction, it’s that if someone isn’t following hardly anyone at all is when I’m cautious. Some can’t help but have hundreds follow them, but if you follow some then that’s good. I think there may be some exceptions based on non-twitter ‘fame’.
Comment by Rob Williams - Jul 29, 2008 @ 01:20 PM
@flowerdust - I use the exact same format you’ve described in 1 - 5. I also have a more sophisticated tracker system which is still in alpha so can’t be listed.
Additionally, I should list a problem I’ve had. When I had my status set as private so that only my followers could read my updates….. twitter would not allow me to control my followers/followings. If someone wanted to follow me and I accepted - I automatically followed them (http://twitter.com/mattsingley/ had to help me figure this out). It was very frustrating and currently - I have lost 50 followers trying to reconcile my problem. Thus my updates are unprotected for now.

One last thing to consider is if you are not following someone you can’t send them a direct message. All replies are public. If you follow someone, you can send them a private message through Twitter.

After 22 years with Zondervan, the international Christian communications company, serving in a variety of marketing capacities, my most recent position (Sr. Dir., Corporate & Internet Communications) was eliminated (along with more than 20 others) in a reorganization of the company. Im believing God wants me somewhere else right now so I’m seeking other opportunities. One way I’m doing that is by using Twitter to expand my network of contacts.

Great post! Probably the most comprehensive “faith tweeps” (twitter peeps) post to date. Thanks to everyone who’s posted users in the comments.
Re: follow/following ratio: as someone who’s spent a lot of time online, I’ve really been trying to focus, to channel my online relationships into people I know in the physical world, face to face. All my social networking and online activities (apart from work) are held up to that principle: is this or that interaction or network going to enhance and strengthen my real-world community, or detract from it?
I make exceptions all the time, of course - it’s not an absolute rule. I follow many influential leaders, local work-related folk and humorous twitterers. I find it useful to “pre-network” online before a big conference (NAB, etc.) so I have an “in” - a basic relationship - to walk up to luminaries and the like.
What guides your social-network decisions?
