Blogging Has Not Tipped Yet

June 05, 2008

BARNA - recenctly released the results of the Barna Technology Study. This is a succinct and very helpful study on the usage patterns of internet technology across population segments.

Read it now!

Most notably, the study revealed that:
- 30% of Americans have sent a Text Message in the past week
- 27% of Americans have made an online purchase in the past week
- 26% of Americans watched an online video last week
- 23% of all Americans downloaded a church podcast in the past week!
- 38% of evangelicals listened to a podcast last week, compared to 17% of other adults

I found this part about blogging particularly interesting:

Blogging has not reached the "tipping point" towards becoming a mainstream activity (an emerging technology is often thought to "tip" toward majority use when the penetration reaches 20% or more of the population). Still, there are an estimated 16 million American adults who use their blog as a pulpit to broadcast their voice to the world. Blogs are most common among single adults, Northeast residents, homosexuals, those not registered to vote, and atheists and agnostics.

Is There a Problem with Anonymity?

June 04, 2008

ThinkChristian recently asked if church is a spectator sport. They highlight the irony that people are often drawn to mega churches to connect with more Christians, but the mega church can also be the most anonymous environment. One of the commenters offered this:

"many, if not most, of these [large] churches don't claim their Sunday morning gathering to be the place that a person is truly known. That happens in home groups, community groups, or the myriad of other small group settings that they provide."

So, what do you think? Is there a problem of anonymity in large churches? If so, is it solved by small groups? OR, if anonymity does exist, is it even a problem?

Our Friends From Passion in Uganda! Louie & Francis…

June 03, 2008

Sally Heffner, a recent addition to the Catalyst Team, just got back from Uganda after spending a week with the Passion team in Kampala. She shared with us the blog from their time overseas, and we wanted to share it with you - amazing! This is written by Louie Giglio and features some pretty incredible pictures including some with one of your favorite Catalyst speakers from 2007, Francis Chan. We hope you are encouraged by what the Lord is doing around the world!

From Monday, June 2nd - Highlighting Passion Kampala

The Medium is the Message

If you don't listen to the Catalyst Podcast, you should. After you listen to our podcast, you should also listen to the Fermi Project podcast.

Recently Gabe Lyons interviewed Shane Hipps. This guy is a very forward thinker and makes some very compelling arguments about how "the medium is the message" and "you become what you behold." His was one of the most interesting talks at the Q conference. His book, The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture, has become a well-acclaimed favorite of Christians in the know.

Big Day For Catalyst - Time To Welcome Ben Arment!

June 02, 2008

Ok, so here's the deal. It's true, it has always been true, and will probably remain true unless the cosmos intervenes and radically shifts the Mars vs. Venus dynamic - women are more thoughtful and caring than men. Case in point? Ben Arment's office. What did the men do to Ben's office? We packed it full of junk and allowed it to become a dirty, red-neck storage room. What did the women (uh, Melissa Kruse) do to Ben's office? Yeah, she cleaned it up. Ben, it's all Chad's fault!

Check out the "before" picture of Ben's office (taken from Ben's blog) and the "in process" picture taken this morning. Later this week Ben is going to post an "after" picture on his blog. Ben, we are glad you're here! (and glad that you're office no longer resembles the Catlayst Vanagon! :))

before, in process, & after...

Upcoming Road Trip dates and itineraries coming soon... stay tuned!
